			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Parents play a key role in ensuring their children meet the daily requirements of calcium intake, according to a recent report from the American Academy of Pediatrics.</p>
<p>The report also states that most children and adolescents are at risk for bone fractures and osteoporosis later in life due to low calcium consumption when they&#8217;re young. Three servings of low-fat milk, cheese or yogurt, or up to 1,300 milligrams of calcium depending on age, are recommended each day to build strong bones.</p>
<p>&#8220;Parents and caregivers often know the importance of calcium, but aren&#8217;t sure how to incorporate it into their child&#8217;s diet,&#8221; said Andrea Garen, a registered dietitian at Dairy Council of California. &#8220;Since dairy foods provide 70 percent of calcium in the Western diet, finding ways to include more dairy can make a difference in a child&#8217;s long-term wellness and bone health.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Garen&#8217;s suggestions include:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Find ways to work more dairy into the diet: Offer a child yogurt or cereal with low-fat milk for breakfast, and string cheese and flavored milk as a snack.</li>
<li> Serve as a child&#8217;s role model: If good nutrition is important to parents, it will also be important to their children.</li>
<li>Insist on family meals: Eating together at home will help parents control what their children eat.</li>
</ul>
<p>Garen added that the Dairy Council of California&#8217;s meal-planning Web site (www.mealsmatter.org) contains hundreds of free and easy-to-make, calcium-rich recipe ideas, including Chicken Crunchers. Parents can try this and other palate-pleasing recipes to help their children meet their daily calcium requirements.</p>
<p><strong>Chicken Crunchers</strong></p>
<p><strong>Ingredients:</strong></p>
<p>1 cup all-purpose flour</p>
<p>Salt</p>
<p>Pepper</p>
<p>4 Egg whites</p>
<p>1/2 cup milk</p>
<p>11/2 cups cornflakes</p>
<p>1 cup reduced-fat, shredded cheddar cheese</p>
<p>6 Chicken breast fillets; cut into strips</p>
<p><strong>Directions:</strong></p>
<p>Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Set up three bowls with the following: 1) flour mixed with a pinch of salt and pepper; 2) an egg-wash, made by beating the eggs and milk together; 3) cornflakes mixed with cheese. Coat a 13 x 9-inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Dip chicken pieces in flour, then into the egg-wash, then roll in the cheesy-flakes mixture. Bake for 25 minutes, turning halfway through to ensure even browning. Serve with ketchup, BBQ sauce or plain yogurt for dipping, if desired.</p>

That might sound like Greek to you, but fiber is an important part of our daily diet, and a high fiber diet might be perfect for your body.</p>
<p>Depending on their solubility in water, there are of two main types of fiber: soluble fiber and insoluble fiber. Both of these types are important for optimum health. Fiber has a number of health benefits and hence is highly recommended in daily food. Some of its health benefits are:</p>
<ul>
<li>It promotes the feelings of fullness and reduces energy consumption. </li>
<li>It prevents constipation, hemorrhoids, and other intestinal problems. </li>
<li>Fiber helps prevent bacterial infection of the appendix. </li>
<li>It reduces the risk of colon cancer.</li>
<li>It stimulates the muscles of the digestive tract and helps them retain their health and tone.
</li>
</ul>
<p>To keep the digestive tract healthy and prevent other disorders like hemorrhoids and intestinal problems, people normally need 20 to 35 grams of fiber daily. These can be obtained from a variety of plants, vegetables and fruits. Fibers are especially abundant in whole foods. All fruits are rich in fiber. For just 2 grams of fiber, you could eat 1 small apple, 1 peach, 1 small banana, 2 prunes, 16 large cherries, or a number of other fruits. Grains also contain fiber. For 2 grams of fiber, simply try 1 slice of whole wheat bread, 2 slices of cracked wheat bread, 1 cup of cooked oatmeal, 2 cups of popped popcorn, or ¼ of a cup of corn bran.  </p>
<p>If you are on a low-carb diet, you can try eating cooked vegetables to provide your body with adequate fiber. For 2 grams of fiber, eat ½ of a cup of broccoli, 1 cup of celery, ½ of a cup of carrots, 1 small potato, 1 large tomato, or a variety of beans. Beans, or any type of legume, are the real powerhouses for fiber. By only eating ½ of a cup of kidney beans, 1 cup of dried peas or lentils, or ½ of a cup of canned baked beans, you can provide your body with a whopping 8 grams of fiber.  If all else fails, small amounts of fiber can also be found in peanuts, walnuts, and pickles, so there is really no excuse for not getting enough fiber in your diet! </p>

Also, vitamins and minerals are catalysts in your body, which speed up or initiate chemical reactions. The difference between the vitamins and the proteins you get from food is that you don’t burn up the vitamins, so you can’t use them for energy.</p>
<p>Because your body does not make most vitamins and minerals directly, you have to get them from food sources or from vitamin supplements. If you aren’t getting enough of a certain vitamin or mineral for a long period of time you can get a specific disease or condition. This will usually be fixed when the vitamin or mineral is re supplied to your body.</p>
<p>Basically, there are 13 Vitamins. Four of them are fat-soluble and nine of them are going to be water soluble. The ones that are fat-soluble can be stored in your body fat and also stored in certain organs such as your liver. The water-soluble vitamins do not get stored in your body in large amounts.</p>
<p>The vitamins that are fat soluble, which means that you can store them in your body for a long time, include A, D, E and K. These dissolve in lipids and require bile in order to be absorbed. They are also stored in tissues, and if you have too many of them they can be toxic to you.</p>
<p>The water-soluble vitamins are going to be C and eight of the B vitamins. These are thiamine, which is B1, Riboflavin, which is B2, niacin, pyridoxine, which is B6, pantothenic acid, which is B5, vitamin B12, biotin and folic acid. These dissolve in water, so if you are cooking or washing, the vitamins might actually be washed out of the food. They are easily absorbed and excreted, and are not stored very much or often in your tissues. These vitamins are seldom going to reach toxic levels.</p>
<p>All of these vitamins are found in food, but if you aren’t able to get the food that you need in order to get the vitamins, you are going to have to turn to nutritional supplements to make sure that you are getting all of the vitamins and minerals that your body is going to need.</p>
